Julia Schäfer

Independent Journalist

Julia Schäfer works as an Independent journalist from India and Germany. Her articles have been published by newspapers and magazines, and she has worked for various TV and radio programmes from BBC World Service to Deutschlandfunk.

She is a frequent contributor to the WDR history format “Zeitzeichen”. She has been working as a blogger, producer and reporter. But her passion are radio documentaries in which she can do a deep dive into certain topics and follow her protagonists over a longer period of time. Her documentaries have been broadcasted across Germany and have been aired at the International Feature Conference in Dublin as well as the International Media Festival Prix Europa. With a documentary about her own family, (“Verheiratet mit dem Vieh. Vom Ende eines Bauernlebens”), she won the Juliane Bartel Medienpreis.

Julia loves to record sounds and stories from across the world. She has reported from Paraguay, Japan, China and India. In 2009, she was chosen for the EBU Master School on Radio Features. In 2018, she was a fellow of the Robert Bosch program “Media Ambassador India-Germany” and has been working for a few weeks at the newspaper Indian Express in New Delhi. She has published radio documentaries about historical figures like Indira Gandhi, as well as recent laws in connection with sexual harassment and abuse.
